This brave man most likely used the Underground Railroad as his escape route. At its peak, around 1000 slaves managed to escape to freedom via the Underground Railroad every year. The system was set up to provide a network of secret routes and safe houses which led to Free States and Canada.

It is thought that he may have escaped via the Underground Railroad in order to join his father in Massachusetts. However, existing records cannot confirm any facts regarding his escape.
