Vladimir Lenin Biography Summary: Vladimir Lenin (1870 - 1924) would become the head of a government of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in 1917 and by 1922 had become the Soviet Union. He set about creating a country that believe in one-party socialist state where everything, all land, industry, natural resources were nationalized. Vladimir Lenin saw himself as a man of destiny and unwavering certainty in the rightness of his cause.
 

He could be volatile and moody and was dismissive of opinions that did not match his own. In an argument he would ignore information or facts that did not support his view and would never admit he was wrong.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 1: Vladimir Lenin was born on April 22nd 1870 and during the 19th century period in history when many empires across the globe collapsed, the Spanish, first and second French, Holy Roman, Mughal and Chinese but the British and Russian Empires, the United States and German Empire where on the rise.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 2: When he was just sixteen years of age his father died in January 1886 of a brain hemorrhage. At this time, Lenin's behavior changed, he became confrontational and not long after this event he decided he no longer believed in God.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 3: Having lost his father, his older brother was hanged after he was arrested and tried for attempting to assassinate Tsar Alexander III. Vladimir Lenin continued with his schooling, leaving with a gold medal and went on to attend Kazan University in 1887 to study law.

Vladimir Lenin took part in a demonstration in 1884 and found himself arrested which in turn led to his expulsion from University and he would be placed under surveillance.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 7: Although he had been expelled from University, with his mother’s assistance, he was able to sit his exams at another University and passed with the equivalent of a first class honors degree.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 8: By 1893 Vladimir Lenin had moved to Saint Petersburg where he began work as an assistant for a barrister all the while within the Marxist revolutionary cell he belonged to he also rose to a more senior position.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 9: In 1897 Vladimir Lenin found himself sentenced to three years exile in Siberia for distributing illegal revolutionary literature for which he was tried and sentenced.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 10: Having met Nadya Krupskaya about five years earlier in early 1898 she appeared in Siberia and joined him in exile having herself been arrested and sentenced for organizing a strike. That same year the couple were married.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 11: With his time in exile complete Vladimir Lenin left Russia and headed for Western Europe. Whilst in Switzerland Vladimir Lenin became acquainted with more Russian Marxists and together they launched a paper in Munich. It would be while producing this paper, which was smuggled illegally into Russia that he took the name Lenin as his pseudonym.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 13: In 1905 in St Petersburg the Bloody Sunday massacre triggered a period of civil unrest that would become known as the Revolution of 1905.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 14: As World War I broke out Vladimir Lenin was in Galicia and because of his Russian citizenship found himself arrested and imprisoned until they could verify his anti-Tsarist identifications. He and Nadya went back to Bern before moving on to Zurich in 1916.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 15: The following year the 1917 February Revolution broke out in St Petersburg and from there the unrest spread to other areas of Russia.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 16: Eventually with his involvement ever increasing he gave a speech announcing the overthrow of the Provisional Government. The Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, were born out of Russia's Social Democrat Party. Lenin was actively supported by Leon Trotsky. Trotsky had superb skills of organisation and created the Red Guards, a Bolshevik militia formed from armed soldiers and factory workers.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 17: With a new government being formed, Lenin was offered the job of Chairman but he refused to accept putting Trotsky’s name in the mix but he was turned down and eventually Lenin agreed. In October 1917, the Bolsheviks overthrew the provisional Russian government. Russia withdrew from WWI and by March 1918 Russia descended into civil war. Lenin had extricated Russia from World War I, and although it meant Russia losing significant territories in Europe he agreed to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 18: The royal Romanov family consisting of Czar Nicholas II, Alexandra and their children Tatiana, Olga, Maria, Anastasia and Alexis were all taken prisoner by the Bolsheviks. On 17 July 1918, as anti-Bolsheviks approached Yekaterinburg, the order to execute Czar Nicholas II and the Romanov royal family was given, almost certainly, on the orders of the Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 19: By 1919 other Bolshevik leaders met with Lenin and other revolutionary socialist from across the globe and formed the Communist International.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 20: Three years later Vladimir Lenin would suffer his first health scare in the form of a stroke and by 1923 he had suffered two more.

Vladimir Lenin Fact 21: Vladimir Lenin died on January 21, 1924 aged fifty three years. He lay in state for four days at which time more than nine hundred thousand people viewed his body to pay their respects.
