Vasco da Gama Biography Summary: Vasco da Gama (1460ís - 1524) was famous for being the first European to reach India by sea. He has gone down in history as one of the greatest explorers of all time. His discovery of the passage to and being the first European to reach India gave Portugal quite the monopoly on trade in the region. Vasco da Gama married in 1501 to Catarina de Ataide and together they had six sons, Francisco, Estevao, Paulo, Cristovao, Pedro and Alvaro as well as a daughter Isabel.
 

His new trade route also made it much safer to travel as they were able to bypass the disputed Mediterranean and the highly dangerous Arabian Peninsula.

His fatherís family was connected to the household of Infante Ferdinand, Duke of Viseu and his motherís family to Infante Diogo, Duke of Viseu *** Education: Vasco da Gamaís education has not been recorded but it is surmised he would have been educated befitting his station. A local historian has suggested Vasco da Gama may have studied at a town called »vora where it is likely he took lessons in mathematics and navigation. *** Vasco da Gama died on December 24, 1524.

Vasco da Gama Fact 1: Vasco da Gama was born in 1460ís and during the 15th century period in history when which is described as the late middle ages to early Renaissance and early modern period and when Portugal and Spain were exploring the oceans of the world and colonizing new lands.

Vasco da Gama Fact 2: Instead of following the SodrŤís he followed his father and joined the Order of Santiago, the master of which was Prince John who became King John the second of Portugal and who doted on the order and so the Gamaís prospects were very high.

Vasco da Gama Fact 3: In 1497 Vasco da Gama led his first expedition to India, he sailed around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa, in December that year he reached the coast of Natal and in January 1498 he was at the mouth of the Zambezi.

Vasco da Gama Fact 4: In May of that year, they reached their destination, Calcutta, India. Upon his return to Portugal he was created Admiral of the Indian Ocean and commanded to return.

Vasco da Gama Fact 12: On Christmas eve 1524 in the city of Cochin, Vasco da Gama would lose his battle with the terrible disease. The great Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama died on December 24, 1524 in Kochi, India. His body was laid to rest originally at the Saint Francis Church located at Fort Kotchi. Later in 1539 he would be re-interred in Vidigueira, Portugal in casket elaborately decorated with gold and jewels.

Influence and Legacy: His greatest legacy was finding the passage after countless ships and thousands of lives and many many years were spent searching for a way to find the way by sea.
