Valentina Tereshkova Biography Summary: Valentina Tereshkova (1937 - Present) was famous for being the first woman in space. From an early age Valentina was interested in the sky. She trained as a skydiver in her local Aeroclub and later would be selected to become a member of the all-female cosmonaut corps. Out of over four hundred applicants she was one of five chosen. From the five, she was chosen as one of two that were scheduled to go into space in Vostok 5 and 6.
 

Valentina Tereshkova was successfully launched into space in Vostok 6 and where the following flight was schedule for her fellow female cosmonaut it was decided she was too feminine and replaced her with a man. Valentina Tereshkova was elected to the State Duma where she still serves her country.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 1: Valentina Tereshkova was born on March 5th 1937 in Bolshoye Maslennikovo, Tutayevsky District, Yaroslavl Oblast, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union and was destined to become a Russian Cosmonaut.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 2: Family: She came from a poor family. Her parents were both immigrants from Belarus with her father, Vladimir Tereshkov, being a tractor driver while her mother was a worker in a tactile plant. Her father fought in the World War II in the Soviet Army and was Killed in Action, leaving her mother to struggle to bring up their three children with Valentina not even three years old at that point. Siblings: She grew up with two older siblings.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 3: Education: She was educated locally from age of eight years but in 1953 she left school and began receiving her education via a correspondence course.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 4: Career: She began her career by skydiving at her local Aeroclub and would make her first jump when she was twenty two years of age.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 6: Also in that year as a member of the Komsomol which was the Young Communist League, she was made the secretary and later would join the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 7: In 1961 after Yuri Gagarinís successful flight into space, the Soviet chief rocket engineer, Sergey Korolyov, suggested putting a woman into space.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 8: By February of 1962 Valentina Tereshkova would be chosen to join a female cosmonaut corp.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 9: Valentina Tereshkova, out of over four hundred potential applicants, she would be chosen as one of five. The other applicants chosen were Irina Solovyova, Zhanna Yorkina, Tatyana Kuznetsova and Valentina Ponomaryova.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 10: Part of the qualifying criteria to be passed was that they had to be parachutists, under the age of thirty years, shorter than five foot seven and weighing less than one hundred and fifty four pounds. What also made her desirable was the fact that he father had been a war hero and also her working class background.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 11: Her training would have included isolation tests, centrifuge tests, weightless flights, rocket theory and spacecraft engineering. Pilot training in MiG-15UTI jet fighters as well as further parachute jumps were also required.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 15: With Solovyova suited and ready to go as Tereshkova ís backup, once the life support and communication checks were complete, Valentina Tereshkova was good to launch.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 16: On June 16th 1963 the first woman was launched successfully into space where she completed his mission of orbiting the earth forty eight times in almost three days. She completed her flight log and also took photographs.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 17: After successfully returning to earth there would not be another woman cosmonaut for nineteen years. She returned to study at the Zhukovsky Air Force Academy where she graduated with a distinction and also earned herself a doctorate in engineering in 1977.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 18: She would be offered several political positions due to her prominence, between 1974 and 1989 she was a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet and from 1969 to 1991 was in the Central Committee of the Communist Party and she retired from the Russian Air Force in 1997.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 19: Although she lost her political office when the Soviet Union collapsed in 2011 she would be elected to the State Duma where she continues to work.

Valentina Tereshkova Fact 20: In 1963 she married Andriyan Nikolayev in the presence of Khrushchev and together they had a daughter, Elena who would be the first person to have had both of her parents travel to space. She divorced Nikolayev and remained but her second husband died in 1999.

Influence and Legacy: Valentina Tereshkova would have been the inspiration for many a girl in the Soviet Union to want to join the space program as well as the Soviet Union Armed Forces. Tereshkova has been honored on countless occasions and to this day is still seen as a highly important person in Russian space history and is revered as a Russian hero only surpassed by Yuri Gagarin and Alexey Leonov.
