Sir William Arthur Stanier Biography Summary: Sir William Arthur Stanier (1876 - 1965) was famous for being the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. Following in his father’s footsteps he became an apprentice at the Great Western Railway and would work his way through the ranks of the industry to become the Chief Mechanical Engineer. So sought after were his talents he was headhunted by London, Midland and Scottish Railway.

He would later be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and was Knighted for his services to the industry and in 1944 became president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He would also be responsible for setting new speed records previously held by Gresley.

Sir William Arthur Stanier Fact 1: Sir William Arthur Stanier was born on May 27th 1876 and during the 19th century period in history when great strides were made in the industrial revolution, the Victoria era was coming to a close and there were vast technological advances being made.

Sir William Arthur Stanier Fact 10: William Stanier produced many successful designs including the “Black 5” mixed traffic 4-6-0 (as depicted above) and a freight locomotive 8F 2-8-0. The Coronation, his Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 No. 6220 beat the Gresley A4’s locomotive speed record and set a new one at 114 miles per hour (the record was later taken back by by an A4 reaching 126.4 mph (203.4 km/h)).
