Queen Elizabeth II Biography Summary:  Queen Elizabeth II has become the longest reigning as well as the longest lived monarch in British history. She has ruled faithfully and with great conviction since the sudden death of her father in 1952. She has at all times remained dignified throughout. Queen Elizabeth II has seen many changes across her realms including the decolonization of South Africa, Canadian patriation and devolution in the United Kingdom. In 2014 Queen Elizabeth II was faced with the potential of Scotland breaking away from the United Kingdom but after their referendum the vote to stay part of the UK won for which is was said, although never publicly, that she was highly delighted.
 

Her children over the years have given her much pleasure as well as heartache. Her three eldest children, Charles, Anne and Andrew have all had failed marriages. The untimely death of her ex-daughter-in-law Princess Diana in 1997 rocked Queen Elizabeth II and the monarchy. Her grandchildren however bring her much pleasure and in 2013 another future King, Prince George of Cambridge, was born to Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 3: Her grandfather King George V died in 1936 leaving her Uncle Edward to succeed to the throne in turn making her second in line to succeed. At that time, if her parents had had a son, she would have been overlooked in his favor as a male heir.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 4: Scandal would ensue when her Uncle Edward became involved and proposed marriage to an American divorcee Wallis Simpson who during the early stages of the relationship was still married to her second husband, the divorce not finalized until 1937 when she was free to marry Edward.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 5: As a result of her Uncle’s choices, Elizabeth's life would be changed forever when, due to opposition to their marriage by the Government which would trigger a constitutional crisis his only option was to abdicate, he did so becoming one of Britain’s shortest reigning monarchs in history serving on three hundred and twenty six days.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 6: With her Uncle’s abdication her father became King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth on December 11th 1936. He would also become the last Emperor of India as well as the first Head of the Commonwealth.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 7: As soon as her father became King, Elizabeth became heir presumptive.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 8: As Britain entered World War II in September of 1939 many children in London were evacuated to ensure their safety and it was suggested that both Elizabeth and her sister Margaret be sent to Canada to wait out the war in safety but their mother would not let them go, she stated quite clearly "The children won't go without me. I won't leave without the King. And the King will never leave."

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 9: So Elizabeth and her sister were initially sent to live at Balmoral before moving to Sandringham House in Norfolk and eventually they were moved to Windsor Castle in 1940 and stayed there throughout the war.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 10: At eighteen years of age in February 1945 Elizabeth joined the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, she trained as a mechanic and driver.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 11: In an effort to take part in the joy of the end of the war, Elizabeth and her sister left the palace anonymously, she later said "We asked my parents if we could go out and see for ourselves. I remember we were terrified of being recognised ... I remember lines of unknown people linking arms and walking down Whitehall, all of us just swept along on a tide of happiness and relief."

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 12: Her relationship with her future husband began in 1934 with not a little help from Lord Mountbatten who was Prince Philip of Greece’s uncle.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 13: Having met initially in 1934 they met again in 1937 and in 1939 having met again and Elizabeth being only thirteen years of age, they began to exchange correspondence. They became officially engaged in 1947.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 14: As the country was still living under rations, Elizabeth bridal gown material had to be purchased using ration coupons but on November 20th 1947 Elizabeth and Philip were married in Westminster Abbey. Although it is customary for the wife to take her husband’s name between Queen Mary and Winston Churchill it was decided in this instance the House of Windsor would remain the royal house name. Together the couple have four children, Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 15: By 1951 Elizabeth was frequently attending her father’s public engagements as his health went into decline. As a precautionary measure Martin Charteris, Elizabeth’s private secretary carried a document, a draft accession declaration, in the unhappy event of the King dying while Elizabeth was on tour.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 16: During the early part 1952 Elizabeth and Philip began a tour of New Zealand and Australia via Kenya. It would be while at their home, Sagana Lodge, in Kenya that news arrived of the death of King George and it was Philip that took Elizabeth aside to give her the devastating news. They immediately returned to England.

Queen Elizabeth II Fact 17: The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took place on June 2nd 1953 at Westminster Abbey, nearly all of the ceremony was televised live which had never been done before.
