Biography Summary: Pieter Bruegel the Younger (1564 – 1636) was son of the famous artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Born in Brussels the family moved to Antwerp when their father died. Pieter Bruegel the Younger made his living by reproducing his father’s work although he would be an original artist in his own right. It was thought for a time he had created work that were of grotesque imagery and fire but later discovered these works were in fact by his brother Jan. He married and had a large family but was never a rich man as he had a leaning towards alcohol. He died in Antwerp in 1636.

Pieter Bruegel the Younger Fact 1: Family – His father was Pieter Bruegel the Elder and his mother Mayken Coecke van Aelst, he had a brother Jan and a sister Marie.

Pieter Bruegel the Younger Fact 2: Background and Early Life – The family of Pieter Bruegel the Younger was full of artists. From the age of five years when his father died, he, his brother Jan and sister Marie were taken in by their maternal grandmother Mayken Verhulst who was an artist in her own right.
