Pablo Picasso Biography Summary: Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973) was famous for being one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. A gifted man his work commands a very high price. In 2015 one of his paintings sold for $179 million dollars. Although artistically he was considered a genius, in his personal life, he made many poor choices. His countless affairs were not always tolerated by the main women in his life and his relationships with his children could be very difficult. Marie-Therese committed suicide four years after his death.
 

His second and last relationship was with Jacqueline Roque and having forbidden two of his children attending his funeral she also killed herself thirteen years after his death.

Pablo Picasso Fact File Biography: Lifespan: 1881 - 1973 *** Full Name: Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso otherwise known as Pablo Picasso *** Occupation: Spanish Painter, Sculptor, Printmaker, Ceramicist and Stage Designer *** Date of Birth: Pablo Picasso was born on October 25th 1881 *** Place of Birth: Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain *** Family background: His father was Don Jose Ruiz y Blasco and his mother was Maria Picasso y Lopez. Although he would baptized into the catholic faith in later life he became an atheist. His father was a painter who specialized in naturalist pictures as well as being a professor of an art school *** Early life and childhood: He grew up in a middle-class family with his parents and younger sister, Lola and Conchita *** Education: Pablo Picasso as well as a formal education he was taught artistically by his father he was a traditionalist *** Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso Fact 1: Pablo Picasso was born on October 1881 and during the 19th century period in history when there was much change across Europe and the world, the first and second French, Spanish, Chinese and Holy Roman Empires all collapsed and Europe would see two World Wars.

Pablo Picasso Fact 2: His first words according to his mother were “piz, piz” shortened version of lapis Spanish for pencil.

Pablo Picasso Fact 3: In 1891 the family moved to A Coruna for their father to become a professor at the School of Fine Arts and remained there for four years.

Pablo Picasso Fact 4: When Picasso was just seven years old he lost his sister Conchita to diphtheria and was completed traumatized. The family then moved to Barcelona.

Pablo Picasso Fact 5: His father managed to persuade the officials at the academy to allow his son to sit the entrance exam for the advanced class and the finally succumbed. What normally took a student a month to complete only took Picasso a week and he was admitted at just thirteen years of age.

Pablo Picasso Fact 6: Between Picasso's father and uncle they decided he should attend Madrid’s Royal Academy of San Fernando. It was the country’s leading school of art.

Pablo Picasso Fact 7: Between 1899 and 1900 Picasso went through what would become known as his modernist period with exposure to the likes of Steinlen, Toulouse-Lautrec, Edvard Munch and Rossetti had a profound effect on his work.

Pablo Picasso Fact 8: In 1900 he made his first excursion to Paris where he befriended Max Jacob, a journalist and poet. Max helped Pablo Picasso learn the language and introduced him to the literature and eventually they shared an apartment together.

Pablo Picasso Fact 9: The next period of Pablo Picasso would be his Blue period which lasted from 1901 to 1904 largely characterized by paintings in shades of blue and blue green, somber paintings.

Pablo Picasso Fact 10: 1904 to 1906 saw the Rose period which highlighted a more cheerful style and acrobats and circus characters.

Pablo Picasso Fact 11: His African-influenced period lasted between 1907 and 1909 and this period led directly into his Cubist period style. Picasso together with Georges Braque were using monochrome neutral and brownish shades as well as taking objects apart and studying their shapes.

Pablo Picasso Fact 12: By 1915 Pablo Picasso had developed yet another style in which he featured either a pipe, glass of a guitar and this period became known as his Crystal Cubism period.

Pablo Picasso Fact 13: When World War I broke out many of his French contemporaries when off to fight but as Picasso was Spanish he was able to remain, at that time, in Avignon and continued his work largely uninterrupted.

Pablo Picasso Fact 14: As the war was coming to end he met and married Olga Khokhlova, a ballerina in 1918 and they spent their honeymoon near Biarritz. After the honeymoon Picasso was in need of money and so started painting exclusively for Paul Rosenberg a French-Jewish art dealer. The two men developed a very deep friendship akin to brothers.

Pablo Picasso Fact 15: By 1927 Picasso’s marriage ended when he began an affair with Marie-Therese Walter. Under French law he would have to split his wealth with his wife so the pair remained married until she died in 1955. Living in the hope that he would marry her eventually, he never did. Together they had a daughter, Maya. He had a son Paulo with Olga and would later have two more children with Francoise Gilot, Claude and Paloma.

Pablo Picasso Fact 16: In the 1930’s the harlequin in his work was replaced by the minotaur which he developed after becoming acquainted with the surrealist.

Pablo Picasso Fact 17: He was living in Paris when World War II broke out and continued to live there even during the occupation. His style of painting was not in the taste of the Nazis so he refrained from exhibiting any of his work.

Pablo Picasso Fact 18: Continually striving to better his position in society Revere found there were always obstacles in his path. He did however always succeed when it came to his own business, as a silversmith he was unsurpassed and would only improve in his ventures.

Pablo Picasso Fact 19: Pablo Picasso met Jacqueline and in 1961 she became his wife and she remained his wife until his death.

Pablo Picasso Fact 20: Pablo Picasso died on April 8th 1973 aged ninety one years. His body was laid to rest at the Chateau of Vauvenargues near Aix-en-Provence.

Influence & Legacy of Pablo Picasso: Although his style of painting may not be to everybody’s taste his works commands a very high price and he is said to rank amongst the most expensive in the world.
