Pablo Escobar Biography Summary: Pablo Escobar (1949 - 1993) was famous for being a Colombian Drug Lord. Pablo Escobar would become one of the top ten richest men in the world at the time of the height of his business, with a net worth estimated at thirty million dollars in the early 1990’s. He maintained a powerful hold over his illegal activities simply by either bribing people of killing them. At one time, because he paid his assassins so well over six hundred Colombian police officers were murdered.
 

He would become known as “The King of Cocaine” and would be the wealthiest criminal of the 20th century. He married Maria Victoria Henao and had two children, Sebastian Marroquin and Manuela Escobar. Maria and her two children travelled initially to Mozambique before he continued on to Argentina.

Pablo Escobar Fact 14: The Medellin Cartel would become responsible for the majority of drug shipments into the United States as well as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Spain. His product was known to have entered Europe via Spain and there were rumors he had networks that even reached Asia.

Pablo Escobar Fact 15: His methods of dealing with authorities would become known as “plato o plomo” which simply meant silver or lead, in other words, money or death. Many hundreds of individuals lost their lives due to Escobar including states officials, policemen and ordinary citizens.

They would spend on thousand dollars a week on rubber bands alone to secure the bundles of cash, which were kept in a warehouse where up to ten percent of the cash had to be written off because the rats ate it.

Pablo Escobar Fact 18: With the death rates in the Colombian capital the highest in the world during the early 1990’s, largely as a result of the amount of money Escobar gave his hitmen for successfully killing police officers and they the assassination of Luis Carlos Galan who was running for the presidency of Colombia, the sitting President, Cesar Gaviria offered Escobar a reduced sentence and privileged treatment if he would surrender and stop all criminal activity.

Pablo Escobar Fact 20: When it was decided to move him to a regular prison facility he was given advance warning through his many paid contacts and was able to orchestrate his escape beforehand.

Pablo Escobar Fact 21: The U.S. put together the Joint Special Operations Command and Centra Spike to train a special Colombian police task force to hunt down Escobar. They were called the Search Bloc.

Pablo Escobar Fact 22: When they were not immediately successful a vigilante group made up of Escobar’s enemies got together, financed by his former associates and enemies, including rival cartels, became known as Los Pepes began to track down and kill Escobar’s relatives and associates as well as destroying possessions and property.

Pablo Escobar Fact 23:  On December 2nd 1993 the Colombian National Police, with assistance from a Colombian electronic surveillance team located Escobar with his bodyguard, hiding in Medellin and after a gun fight both were shot dead.

Influence & Legacy: For those people that lived in Medellin, he was their modern day Robin Hood. He had helped and financially supported the poor of his hometown and they mourned his passing. His business was taken over the Cali Cartel for only a few short years before they too were captured or killed by the Colombian government.
