Muhammad Ali Biography Summary: Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr and began his boxing career with that name. It would be later, when he found the faith of Islam and became a Muslim. He found boxing quite by chance when advised by a local police offer to learn how to box when he found his bicycle missing. Married four times, his first marriage broke down because of his religion. His second marriage saw his wife convert to Islam and together they had four children. His second marriage broke down after an affair and Muhammad Ali married his third wife and had two daughters, his second daughter followed in his footsteps and became a boxer.

Muhammad Ali Fact 1: Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., later known as Muhammad Ali, was born on January 17th 1942 and during the 20th century period in history when there were world changing events happening including the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Cold War.

Muhammad Ali Fact 2: As a youth of twelve years old he was found by a policeman hopping mad having discovered his bicycle had been stolen. When he told the policeman he was going to find the kid that stole his bike and “whup” him, the policeman suggested he learn to box first.

Muhammad Ali Fact 3: He followed the policeman’s advice and learned how to box, training under Chuck Bodak, a renowned cutman.

Muhammad Ali Fact 4: His amateur career was a successful one. He won Kentucky Golden Gloves titles six times, an Amateur Athletic Union National Title as well as the Light Heavyweight gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Rome in 1960.

Muhammad Ali Fact 6: His professional career began in October 1960 against Tunney Hunsaker in which he won after six rounds on a decision.

Muhammad Ali Fact 7: His record after that was nineteen wins, no losses and of the nineteen wins fifteen were by knockout and some of his competitors included Jim Robinson, Donnie Fleeman, Tony Esperti, Doug Jones as well as Henry Cooper.

Muhammad Ali Fact 8: During those early years one of his toughest bouts was with Doug Jones on Jones’ home turf of Madison Square Garden in New York. Jones was a tough boxer and stunned Ali in the first round. They decision however went in Ali’s favor which did not go down well with the crowd.

Muhammad Ali Fact 9: Although he had asked Sugar Ray Robinson to be his manager, he was turned down and hired Angelo Dundee instead.

Muhammad Ali Fact 11: He was also getting a reputation for being vocally dismissive of his opponents, calling Liston “the big ugly bear”, he also said “Liston even smells like a bear” and that “After I beat him I’m going to donate him to the zoo”.

Muhammad Ali Fact 12: At the weigh-in for this bought he boasted he was going to “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee” and shouted at Liston “someone is going to die at ringside tonight” as well as say “Your hands can’t hit what your eyes can’t see.” Some say his mouthing off was out of fear, others that it was part of his performance.

Muhammad Ali Fact 13: During their famous bout, Liston came out at Ali with a knockout his intention but Clay’s speed defeated his early attempts. Instead Clay caught him in the third round with a combination of punches that saw Liston’s knees buckle and cut him under his eye, something that no one had ever done to Liston before.

Muhammad Ali Fact 22: In 1976 Muhammad Ali took part in a Tokyo exhibition bout against Japans Antonio Inoki, a professional martial artist and wrestler. Although the fight was not a competitive one Ali had his legs bruised, two blood clots were discovered and an infection.

Muhammad Ali Fact 23: His health went into a decline and Muhammad Ali made the announcement that he was semi-retiring in order to concentrate of his faith, having fallen out with the Nation of Islam he then converted to Sunni Islam.

Muhammad Ali Fact 24: Ali’s health went into a sharp decline in the 1980’s and by 1984 he was given the diagnoses of suffering with Parkinson’s disease. His health has continued to decline over the years since then.
