Julie Andrews Fact 1: Julia Elizabeth Wells was born on October 1, 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England.

Julie Andrews Fact 2: She is an English actress, dancer and singer who is most famous for performing lead roles in the well known musical films Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music.

Julie Andrews Fact 3: Her mother was called Barbara Ward Wells and at the time of Julie Andrews' birth, she was married to Edward Charles 'Ted' Wells. Ted Wells was not Julie Andrews' biological father. Her mother divorced Ted Wells and married Julie's stepfather, Ted Andrews, in 1943.

Julie Andrews Fact 4: She lived in Surrey for a short time with her brother John and Ted Wells, however, they felt that the talented girl would benefit more from living with her mother and stepfather so she was sent to live with them in London. Her mother and Ted Andrews had joined the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA); an organization founded in 1939 to entertain the armed forces of Great Britain during the Second World War.

Her stepfather was a violent drunk and her family were very poor. When her family's financial situation began to improve, they moved to the wealthier area of Beckenham and then to Hersham.

Julie Andrews Fact 6: She received lessons, financed by her stepfather, at the Cone-Ripman School. She was introduced to Madame Lilian Stiles-Allen, a British vocal coach and soprano, who was a huge influence on Julie Andrews.
