Igor Sikorsky Biography Summary: Igor Sikorsky (1889 - 1972) was the famous Russian-American inventor and aeronautics engineer who designed aircraft such as seaplanes and the 'Clipper' series of airplanes. Igor Sikorsky also built the first successful helicopter in America. Igor Sikorsky was an extraordinary man with a vision that he saw accomplished. Unable to accomplish that vision in Russia he uprooted his life and moved to America. Igor Sikorsky developed the first practical American helicopter, pioneering the rotor configuration still in use today.

His Sirkorsky R-4 would become the first helicopter of its kind to be used not only in the American armed forces but also in the armed forces of the United Kingdom as well as in air sea rescue.

His father’s family were of Russian and polish nobility and was the grandson of a Russian Orthodox priest and held strong monarchist and Russian beliefs *** Early life and childhood: Igor Sikorsky grew up in Kiev *** Education: Igor Sikorsky began his education at home being tutored by his mother who instilled in him a deep love of art, he follow up by attending the Saint Petersburg Imperial Naval Academy

Igor Sikorsky Fact 9: His work would be interrupted by the outbreak of World War I and after that due to the devastation left its wake he decided his only option to continue his work was to immigrate to America.

Igor Sikorsky Fact 10: Igor Sikorsky arrived in New York on March 30th 1912 and took up a position of teaching and lecturing while searching for a position within the aviation industry.

Igor Sikorsky Fact 11: In 1923 Igor Sikorsky founded the Sikorsky Manufacturing Company in Roosevelt, New York and was given assistance by several former Russian military officers. His first major contributor would be Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Igor Sikorsky Fact 13: His Company the Sikorsky Manufacturing Company transferred to Stratford in Connecticut in 1929 and would become part of the United Aircraft and Transport Corporation in July of that year.

Igor Sikorsky Fact 14: His main interest revolved around vertical flight and his first successful tethered flight was with the Vought-Sikorsky VS-300 in September of 1939. The first free flight of this craft was made in May of 1940.

Igor Sikorsky Fact 15: The success of that design led to his next project, the R-4 helicopter.

Igor Sikorsky Fact 16: The R-4 would become the world’s first single, three bladed main rotor and powered by a radial engine two seater helicopter, not only used by the United States Army Air Forces bur the Navy, Coast Guard and even the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.

Igor Sikorsky Fact 17: Igor Sikorsky became part of the faculty of the University of Rhode Island to put together an Aeronautical Engineering program until 1948 and he would also give lectures at the University of Bridgeport.

Igor Sikorsky Fact 18: Igor Sikorsky died in his home in Easton, Connecticut on October 26th of 1972 at the age of eighty three years. His body was laid to rest at the Saint John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Cemetery.

Influence & Legacy: In 1987 he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame. He is ranked 12th out of 51 Heroes of Aviation in Flying magazine in 2013. His company the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in Stratford, Connecticut is still a world leading helicopter manufacturer.
