Benozzo Gozzoli

Biography Summary: Benozzo Gozzoli (1421 - 1497) was one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance era. The career of Benozzo Gozzoli spanned many years. Some of his earliest work is believed to be from 1447 after being summoned, together with Fra Angelico by Pope Eugene IV to create a fresco in the Vatican Palace. Benozzo Gozzoli travelled to Umbria to work there for several years before returning to Florence. By 1464 he had moved to Tuscany and from there on to Pisa.
 

The last known works of his were created in Pistoria and was the subject of the Old Testament amounting to approximately 24 individual paintings as well as several unrelated to this topic. He was assisted, it is believed, by Zanobi Macchiavelli.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 1: He was born during the Renaissance period in history which began in Northern Italy during the 14th century

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 2: Benozzo Gozzoli was sent to Florence by his father together with the rest of their family - Alesso di Benozzo, Gerolamo and Francesco in 1427.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 3: His first teacher was Fra Angelico, a famous early Renaissance painter from Tuscany.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 4: Some of the earliest work of Benozzo Gozzoli can be seen in the convent of San Marco where he carried out work from Fra Angelico’s designs.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 5: In 1447 together with Fra Angelico they travelled to Rome having been summoned by Pope Eugene IV to decorate a fresco in the Vatican Palace.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 12: In Umbria in the S Fortunato monastery, near Montefalco, Benozzo Gozzoli painted the Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels together with several other pieces.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 13: Whilst in Montefalco he took on an assistant, Pier Antonio Mezzastris, an artist born in Foligno in Umbria, only nine years his junior.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 14: His next commission would see Benozzo Gozzoli travel back to Florence where it is said he created his most famous piece in the Magi Chapel of the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi which was the Journey of the Magi to Bethlehem and also Angels in Paradise.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 15: During this stay in Florence Benozzo Gozzoli also completed his Virgin and Child with Saints in 1461.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 16: From Florence in 1464 Benozzo Gozzoli set out for San Gimignano where he undertook several projects, one for the church of Sant’Agostino.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 17: In 1469 Benozzo Gozzoli began a massive project on a series of murals from the Old Testament for the Campo Santo of Pisa.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 18: Zanobi Macchiavelli was understood to have given his assistance with this enormous project.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 19: It is said, with an element of certainty, that Benozzo Gozzoli continued this work up until at least 1485.

Benozzo Gozzoli Fact 20: Benozzo Gozzoli died in 1497 in Pistoria possibly from the bubonic plague and was laid to rest in a tomb in Campo Santo believed to have been a gift from the local authorities in his honor.

Notable Events of the Renaissance and during the life of Benozzo Gozzoli include: Charles VI of France and Henry V of England both die. Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake in Rouen. Cosimo de’Medici became ruler of Florence.
